Why You Should Have a Backup Plan

Expect the unexpected because things have a way of not going the way we planned. Life is unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean we should give up on our plans and go with the flow. After all, you can’t let disruptions get in the way of fulfilling your important obligations and accomplishing your big goals. By having a backup plan, you can deal with most disruptions and stay on track.

Here are some starter steps for creating a backup plan:

  • Give yourself extra time: One of the best ways to plan ahead is to give yourself time to deal with the unexpected. Instead of waking up just in time to get ready for work, wake up a little earlier and leave early for work. By giving yourself extra time, you’ll have wiggle room to deal with common issues, like getting stuck in slow traffic, and still be on time.
  • Plan ahead: If you have to be somewhere, plan ahead to make sure you can leave on time with everything you need for the day. Setting out the things you need ahead of time can be a great way to stay organized. If you’re doing something for the first time, run through all the steps you’ll need to be prepared.
  • Build an arsenal of extra resources: Consider what backup items would help you avoid a mishap. This could include anything from getting a backup alarm clock to make sure you wake up on time, making up some grab-and-go food ahead of time or keeping a first aid kit on hand.
  • If all else fails, communicate: Preparing ahead will help you stay on track for most disruptions, but every now and then, a disruption will throw you completely off track. If you are unable to meet an obligation, communicate with the person or organization that is expecting you as soon as possible.

  1. Do you have a backup plan to help you get to work on time?
  2. Think of a moment when preparing ahead of time could have helped you avoid a problem. Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?
  3. Do you think having a backup plan makes fulfilling your obligations easier?
