Why Trying Your Best is Important

“Try your best.” It’s a phrase we’ve probably heard before, but what does it actually mean? Trying your best means doing everything you possibly can to make something happen. And it turns out having a try-your-best attitude can not only help you reach more goals, it can also make you feel more engaged in life. Even if you’re playing a simple game of kickball, everything is more exciting, interesting and fun when you are genuinely focused on doing your absolute best to win — and that definitely holds true at work.

At the end of the day, the more things you truly try, the better you will become. Trying your best is simply a great way to improve your skills and up your game at work and in life. Here’s how to try your best:

  • Go all-in: When you are trying your best, you are doing everything to make that goal happen. That takes some reflection, preparation and action on your part to make sure you are truly giving something your best shot.
  • Don’t give up after one shot: If you are truly trying your best to do something, you cannot give up, even if it’s difficult and even if your first attempts don’t work out. Keep trying until you figure out how to make it happen.
  • Don’t worry about failing: When you are trying your best to succeed, worrying about failure can be a distraction. If you make a mistake, just keep trying your hardest to make your end goal happen. Remember that doing your best isn’t something you do once — it’s an attitude you keep applying to your life.
  • Ask for advice: If you’re doing everything possible to make something happen, recognize that advice from someone knowledgeable could help you. If you know someone who could help you up your game and win, don’t be afraid to ask them for help.

  1. How do you think trying your best at work could help you succeed?
  2. Do you have a big goal? If so, are you truly trying your best to reach it?
  3. If there was one thing you could put your full effort into achieving, what would it be?
